On 1 October, the ATO announced it would stop accepting credit card payments after 30 November 2026. The decision followed the Reserve Bank's ban on card surcharges, with the ATO saying it wouldn't be appropriate to pass the cost of card fees on to the community.

After concerns from small businesses about the short notice, the government announced funding on 9 October to delay the change. Card payments to the ATO are now expected to continue until 30 June 2027.

What this means for you

For now, nothing changes. If you pay your BAS or other ATO bills by credit card, you can keep doing so.

If you have a payment plan linked to a credit card, you may have received an ATO letter asking you to change your payment method before 30 November. Letters sent before 9 October may still mention the earlier date, so you might want to check ato.gov.au before making any changes.

What's expected after 30 June 2027

The Treasurer has said the ATO will continue to accept card payments through third-party providers after 30 June 2027, which may involve a fee, along with debit cards and bank transfers. The ATO is still talking with card companies, so the details may change.

If you rely on this option for tax payments, the extra time is a good opportunity to try another method, such as BPAY or a debit card, ahead of 30 June 2027.
